立つ瀬がない

●それじゃ私の立つ瀬がないじゃないか. That places me in a dilemma [tight corner, fix]. | Then, where do I come in? | That would leave me in an awkward position.

・先方が取り引きしたいと言ってきたから苦労して社内を説得したのに, 今になってやめると言われては私としても立つ瀬がない. They said they wanted to do business with us, so I worked hard to convince people in our company. Now to be told that they're pulling out really leaves me in the lurch.

・(問題が)難しすぎるというから易しくしてやったのに, 今度は易しすぎると文句を言われては立つ瀬がない. First you said that the problems were too difficult, so I made them easier. Now you complain that they're too easy. I don't know why I bother.

・一生懸命つくっても, レトルトのほうがおいしいと言われては立つ瀬がない. After I worked so hard cooking, to be told that heat-and-serve food tastes better―what's the point?

・返事ももらえないまま帰るのでは使者として立つ瀬がない. There is no need for an envoy if I come back without even getting a reply.
